Weekend Getaway to Lake Geneva

Quick answer: Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is the best all-around lake town near Chicago. It’s about 80 miles and 90 minutes from the Loop, the lake is big, deep and clear, and it has a year-round resort scene the closer lakes don’t.

New Buffalo, Michigan wins if you want Lake Michigan beaches at the same distance. Elkhart Lake and Green Lake win if you’ll drive 2.5 to 3 hours for clearer, quieter water.

Chicagoans have been taking the train and then the car up to Geneva Lake for weekends since the 1870s. Plenty of other lake towns sit within 3 hours of the city, though, and a few of them beat Lake Geneva at specific things.

Here’s how 9 of them compare, followed by everything you need to plan a Lake Geneva weekend.

The 9 best lake towns near Chicago, ranked

Ranked on 3 things: how far you drive, how good the water is, and how much there is to do once you get there. Lake Geneva wins because it’s the only one near the top on all 3.

1. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

About 80 miles · about 90 minutes · Central time · year-round

Best overall4 seasons

A spring-fed glacial lake of about 5,400 acres, ringed by a public Shore Path of about 21 miles that runs past 1800s estates. The Mailboat, Black Point Estate, Yerkes Observatory and 2 big resorts are all here.

It’s the only lake town on this list that stays busy in January, thanks to Winterfest and skiing at Grand Geneva. The tradeoff: summer Saturdays downtown are crowded, and lakefront property costs more than anywhere else nearby.

Tip: Stay in Williams Bay or Fontana for the same lake with less traffic, then drive 15 minutes into downtown Lake Geneva for dinner.

2. New Buffalo, Michigan

About 70 miles · about 75 minutes · Eastern time

Lake MichiganBeaches

The closest real Lake Michigan beach town to Chicago, with a public beach, a harbor and Harbor Country’s small towns (Union Pier, Lakeside, Three Oaks) just north.

It beats Lake Geneva for sand and sunsets over open water. It loses on boating (Lake Michigan gets rough fast) and on winter, when most of Harbor Country goes quiet.

Tip: Michigan is on Eastern time. You lose an hour on the drive up, so a “1 p.m. check-in” means leaving the city before 11.

3. Fox Lake and the Chain O’Lakes, Illinois

About 60 miles · about 75 minutes · Central time

ClosestBoating

A chain of connected lakes with nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline, plus Chain O’Lakes State Park. Illinois calls it the busiest inland recreational waterway per acre in the country.

That’s the catch. The water is shallow and crowded on summer weekends, and the towns are built around marinas and bars more than a downtown. Great for a day of boating, thinner for a full weekend.

4. Delavan Lake, Wisconsin

About 90 miles · about 1 hour 40 minutes · 10 minutes west of Lake Geneva

FishingLake Geneva area

A busy boating and fishing lake about 52 feet at its deepest, next to the city of Delavan and its historic downtown. It’s warmer and greener than Geneva Lake, and the scene is more pontoon than yacht club.

The Belfry Music Theatre and The Dancing Horses Theatre are both close by.

5. Twin Lakes, Wisconsin

About 65 miles · about 75 minutes · 20 minutes south of Lake Geneva

Free showsLake Geneva area

Lake Mary and Lake Elizabeth sit right on the Illinois line. The Aquanuts put on free water ski shows at Lance Park on Wednesday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Memorial Day to Labor Day.

It’s a short hop to Lake Geneva for dinner, which makes it a good base if Lake Geneva lodging is booked.

6. South Haven, Michigan

About 120 miles · about 2 hours · Eastern time

LighthouseLake Michigan

A harbor town with a red pierhead lighthouse, beaches on both sides of the Black River and summer blueberry farms inland. More beach town than lake town, and a solid pick for a sand-and-sunset weekend.

7. Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan

About 140 miles · about 2.5 hours · Eastern time

ArtsDunes

Galleries, a hand-cranked chain ferry across the Kalamazoo River and Oval Beach below the dunes. It has more shops and galleries per block than anywhere else on this list.

The drive is the problem. Two and a half hours each way, plus the lost hour to Eastern time, eats a short weekend.

8. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

About 150 miles · about 2.5 hours · 1 hour north of Milwaukee

Clearest waterRacing

A small, spring-fed lake (292 acres, 119 feet deep) with a sandy bottom and some of the clearest water in the state. 3 resorts sit on the lake, and Road America’s 4-mile road course is just outside the village.

Book far ahead for race weekends. The rest of the time it’s very quiet.

9. Green Lake, Wisconsin

About 170 miles · about 3 hours · Central time

DeepestGolf

At 237 feet, Green Lake is the deepest natural inland lake in Wisconsin, and at 7,350 acres it’s bigger than Geneva Lake. Resort hotels have lined the north shore since the 1880s.

It’s the best quiet-lake pick on this list. It’s also twice as far as Lake Geneva, so it works better for a long weekend than a Friday-night escape.

When another lake town beats Lake Geneva

You want a Lake Michigan beach. Go to New Buffalo, South Haven or Saugatuck. Geneva Lake’s beaches are good, but they’re inland-lake beaches.

You want to boat in under an hour. The Chain O’Lakes is closer for most of Chicago’s north and northwest suburbs.

You want the clearest, quietest water. Elkhart Lake and Green Lake both win, if you’ll drive 2.5 to 3 hours.

For everything else (a weekend that mixes the lake with good restaurants, resorts, golf, history and a real downtown), Lake Geneva is the closest place that has all of it.

Where to stay around Lake Geneva

Geneva Lake has 3 towns on its shore and several more within 20 minutes. Each has its own feel.

Lake Geneva (the city)

East end of the lake · Riviera, Shore Path, Mailboat

The busiest town on the lake, with downtown shops and restaurants on Main, Broad and Geneva streets, a few blocks from Riviera Beach and the tour-boat piers. Park once and you can get around downtown on foot.

Williams Bay

North shore · about 15 minutes from downtown Lake Geneva

A smaller village with a public beach, Yerkes Observatory (373 W. Geneva St.) and the 231-acre Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy, which has free trails and boardwalks. PIER 290 (1 Liechty Dr.) is the summer hangout, with fire pits and live music on the water.

Fontana-on-Geneva Lake

West end · about 20 minutes from downtown Lake Geneva

Fontana has the biggest sand beach on the lake, plus Reid Park, Little Foot Playground and summer Movies on the Beach. The Abbey Resort (269 Fontana Blvd.) and its marina are a few blocks away.

Geneva National

Between Lake Geneva and Williams Bay, off Hwy. 50

A gated golf community on Lake Como with 3 championship courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino. Homes, condos and a resort hotel sit along the fairways.

Abbey Springs

South shore, Fontana

A gated association with its own beach, piers, golf course, pools and a full summer calendar run by the HOA.

A 2-night Lake Geneva weekend plan

Friday night

Leave the city by 2 p.m. to beat the worst of I-94. Watch the sunset from Oak & Oar at The Geneva Inn (N2009 S. Lake Shore Dr.), or eat Italian at Sopra Bistro (724 W. Main St.) downtown.

Saturday

Breakfast early at Simple Café on Broad Street; the line builds after 9. Walk the Shore Path west from Riviera Beach for an hour or two.

Take the Mailboat (June 15 to Sept 15, book ahead) or rent a pontoon from Marina Bay or Elmer’s on Wrigley Drive. End the day at PIER 290 in Williams Bay.

Sunday

Brunch at Egg Harbor Café downtown, then a free 45-minute loop through Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay. From May through October, add Safari Lake Geneva (reservations required). Head home before 3 p.m. to miss the southbound backup.

Beaches at Riviera, Fontana, Williams Bay and Big Foot Beach State Park are open and staffed. Free Concerts in the Park run Thursdays in Flat Iron Park, and the Venetian Festival closes out August. See the summer guide.

Fall (September and October)

The local favorite. The water stays warm into September, crowds drop after Labor Day and color peaks around mid-October. The Walworth County Fair runs Labor Day week in Elkhorn (2026 was its 177th year), and downtown hosts Oktoberfest. See the fall guide.

Winter (December to February)

Winterfest brings the U.S. Snow Sculpting competition to the lakefront in late January or early February. Ski at Grand Geneva MountainTop or Alpine Valley, and look for ice fishing shanties once the lake freezes. See the winter guide.

Spring (April and May)

Quieter and cheaper. Restaurant Week lands in late April, and farmers markets open in May (Thursdays in Lake Geneva, Fridays in Williams Bay). See the spring guide.

Mistakes Chicago weekenders make

Leaving at 4 p.m. on Friday. I-94 and I-90 back up badly. Leave before 2 or after 7.

Forgetting Michigan’s time zone. New Buffalo, South Haven and Saugatuck are an hour ahead. Dinner reservations and check-out times are Eastern.

Booking Lake Geneva lodging late. Summer weekends, Venetian Festival and Winterfest fill up weeks ahead.

Seeing only downtown Lake Geneva. Williams Bay and Fontana are 15 to 20 minutes away and feel completely different.

If you’re moving here

A lot of Lake Geneva weekenders end up shopping for a second home. The first thing to sort out is lakefront versus lake access.

Lakefront means your lot touches the water, and you can apply for your own pier. Lake access means you share a pier, beach or launch through an association, and the home sits back from the shore.

Property typeTypical asking range
Geneva Lake lakefront$4 million to $15 million+
Lake access with association pier rights$800,000 to $6 million
Golf community homes$350,000 to $3 million
In-town condos and homes$200,000 to $1.5 million
Country homes and larger lots$500,000 to $5 million

Ranges shift with the market, so check current listings. Property taxes vary by town and school district; look at the actual tax bill on any home you’re considering. Wisconsin’s lottery and gaming credit applies only to a primary residence.

Piers on Geneva Lake need permits, and length, lifts and slips are regulated by state shoreland rules plus county and municipal zoning. Confirm what’s allowed before you buy.
