Lake Geneva Winterfest 2027 and the Best Winter Festivals near Lake Geneva

Quick answer: Lake Geneva Winterfest runs Wednesday, Feb. 3 through Sunday, Feb. 7, 2027, at Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park downtown. It’s free. Snow sculptors carve from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.

Go Saturday for finished sculptures and awards-day crowds, or Thursday to watch the carving with more room. Grand Geneva’s Winter Carnival is the same Saturday, about 10 minutes away.

Winterfest is the biggest winter weekend on Geneva Lake. 15 teams compete in America’s Snow Sculpting Invitational right on the lakefront, and downtown fills in around them with an ice sculpture walk, bonfires on the beach and live entertainment.

The organizer calls 2027 the 32nd annual. It’s the anchor of a 3-week run of winter festivals around the Southern Lakes, from Delavan in mid-January to Grand Geneva in February.

What you’re watching

Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park · 11 a.m. Wed, Feb. 3 to 11 a.m. Sat, Feb. 6, 2027 · free

Free15 teams

Each 3-person team gets a block of packed snow 8 feet wide, 8 feet deep and 10 feet tall, and 72 hours to turn it into a sculpture. Most work through the cold with hand tools, saws and a lot of shoveling.

Fellow sculptors do the judging, scoring artistic merit, technical skill, creativity, visual impact and the message behind each piece. The top 3 earn a spot in the 2028 Invitational.

Tip: You vote too. A People’s Choice Award goes to the public favorite, so look for the ballot when you visit.

Downtown ice sculpture walk

Ice carvings line the sidewalks outside downtown businesses, a block or 2 up from the lake on Broad, Main and Geneva streets. It’s the easy way to pair the festival with lunch and shopping.

Bonfires on the Beach

Lakefront beach · evenings · 2027 schedule not posted yet

Evening

Fires on the sand next to the frozen lake. Go after dark, once the sculptures are lit, and the whole lakefront looks different.

Parking and shuttles

How it worked in 2026

Paid downtown parking · free weekend shuttles · 2027 plan not posted yet

ShuttlePaid parking

In 2026, downtown parking cost $2 an hour Monday to Thursday and $4 an hour Friday to Sunday, enforced 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Free shuttles ran Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., about every 20 minutes. Pickup was at the Park-n-Ride (120 E. Sheridan Springs Rd. at Edwards Blvd.) and the Home Depot lot (550 N. Edwards Blvd.), both north of Hwy. 50. Drop-off was at Baker St. and Wrigley Dr., 1 block from the lakefront. One shuttle was accessible.

Tip: On Saturday, skip downtown parking entirely and take the shuttle. Check the City of Lake Geneva site or the official Winterfest site the week before for 2027 rates and stops.

What to wear

Dress for standing still, which is colder than moving. Insulated boots with good tread (the plaza gets icy), wool socks, a hat that covers your ears, mittens rather than gloves, and a layer you can shed in a warm shop. Hand warmers in your pockets help on a windy day off the lake.

Strollers and accessibility

The plaza and paths can be packed snow and ice. A stroller with big wheels or a sled works better than a small-wheeled stroller. The 2026 shuttle had 1 accessible bus, and downtown sidewalks are cleared but uneven.

Where to warm up

Coffee and hot chocolate. Downtown cafés are a few blocks from the plaza. See the coffee shop guide for the best ones.

A fireside drink. Baker House (327 Wrigley Dr.) sits across from the beach in an 1885 mansion. Emmi’s (300 Wrigley Dr.) and Barrique (835 Wrigley Dr.) are close too. More in the bars and wineries guide.

An indoor hour. The Geneva Lake Museum (255 Mill St.) is open winter weekends 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Tristan Crist Magic Theatre and Area 262 (100 N. Edwards Blvd.) work for an evening.

Dinner. Book ahead for Saturday. The restaurants guide, supper clubs and Friday fish fry pages cover the options.

Local makersIndoors

A small indoor market of local makers in downtown Elkhorn. An easy stop on a Delavan Winterfest Saturday. See the Elkhorn guide for the rest of town.

For trails, the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit has hosted candlelight hikes and skis in past winters, and the Ice Age Trail runs through it. In Williams Bay, watch for iceboat racing on a cold, clear weekend. Everything else is in the winter activities guide.

A Winterfest weekend plan

Friday

Arrive midafternoon and see the sculptures in progress while crowds are light. Check in, then a Friday fish fry or supper club dinner.

Saturday

Shuttle in by 10 a.m. Watch the final hour before the 11 a.m. deadline, vote for People’s Choice, then the downtown ice sculptures over lunch. Afternoon at Grand Geneva’s Winter Carnival or a warm museum. Back for the bonfires and lit sculptures after dark.

Sunday

A slow breakfast, one more pass at the finished sculptures with fewer people, and a snowshoe at Big Foot Beach State Park before the drive home.

Cold-weather backup

If it’s below zero or raining, do the sculptures in 2 short visits and fill the middle with the Geneva Lake Museum, the magic theater or a long lunch. See the rainy day guide.

What Winterfest visitors get wrong

Arriving Saturday at noon with no parking plan. Downtown is full by then. Use the shuttle.

Expecting finished sculptures on Wednesday. They’re blocks of snow at 11 a.m. on day 1.

Dressing for moving instead of standing. You’ll stand in the wind off the lake. Layer up.

Trusting an old schedule. Dates move every year (2026 was late January, 2027 is early February). Check before you book.

Booking lodging late. Downtown rooms fill weeks out for Winterfest weekend.

If you’re moving here

Winterfest is the week downtown Lake Geneva is busiest in winter, and it’s a good time to see how the lakefront works in February: which streets get plowed first, where parking goes, and what the shoreline looks like once the crowds leave Sunday night.

Downtown condos a few blocks from the Riviera put you minutes from the festival grounds. Homes around Williams Bay, Fontana and Delavan Lake are 15 to 20 minutes away. See the Lake Geneva community guide.
