Williams Bay Community Guide

Quick answer: Williams Bay is a village of about 3,000 people on the north shore of Geneva Lake, about 6 miles west of downtown Lake Geneva and roughly 85 miles from Chicago. It has a public beach and marina, Yerkes Observatory, the 231-acre Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy and a small downtown on Hwy. 67.

Homes run from lakefront on the bay to lake-access houses, older village homes a few blocks from the beach, and condos. The Williams Bay School District covers 4K through 12 in 2 buildings.

Williams Bay is named for Capt. Israel Williams, who settled here in 1837. After the 1871 Chicago Fire it became a summer retreat, and the railroad ran right to the bay until the 1960s. Today it’s the largest village on the lake, with a downtown you can cross in 5 minutes.

Larger lots and rural parcels in the surrounding towns of Walworth, Geneva and Delavan, 5 to 15 minutes from the beach, often with a Williams Bay mailing address.
