Best Lake Geneva Boat Tours

Best Lake Geneva boat tours
The U.S. Mailboat, Black Point Estate, dining cruises, and boat rentals on Geneva Lake, checked against each operator for the 2026 season.
Updated September 24, 2026. Prices are posted adult fares and change often, so confirm before you book.
Quick answer
The U.S. Mailboat Tour is the Geneva Lake boat ride worth building a trip around. Mail jumpers leap off the moving boat to deliver mail to 75 lakeside piers while a guide covers the estates. Tickets start at $60 per adult for 2.5 hours, from the Riviera Docks at 812 Wrigley Drive in downtown Lake Geneva. It runs June 15 to September 15, and summer weekends sell out.
Outside mailboat season, take the Full Lake Tour ($57, 2 hours) for the same shoreline without the jumping. The Black Point Estate tour ($55, 3.5 hours, May through October) is the only public tour inside a Gilded Age house on the lake.
Want the wheel yourself? Marina Bay and Elmer’s rent boats from downtown Lake Geneva. Jerry’s and Gordy’s rent from Fontana at the west end. If you were born on or after January 1, 1989, Wisconsin requires a boating safety certificate to drive.

Why the boat matters on Geneva Lake
Geneva Lake is about 5,262 acres and 135 feet deep, ringed by a 21-mile Shore Path. Many of the big estates, built by Chicago families in the decades after the 1871 fire, face the water, so the lake is where you see them properly.
Downtown Lake Geneva sits at the east end. Williams Bay is on the north shore and Fontana is at the west end. Every public cruise leaves from downtown; the rental piers split between downtown and Fontana.
Below is every public tour and rental operator on Geneva Lake, plus the Lake Lawn Queen on nearby Delavan Lake, each with 2026 prices and parking notes.

How the ranking works
Order is based on what each trip gives you that nothing else on the lake does, weighed against price and how hard it is to get a seat.
- U.S. Mailboat Tour. A working mail route with 75 jumps and the fullest narration on the lake. Its only weakness is availability.
- Black Point Estate Tour. The only way inside one of the lake’s historic houses. Longer and pricier in time, which is why it’s second.
- Full Lake and Best of the Lake tours. The same shoreline story with more departures and a wider season.
- Pontoon and tritoon rentals. Freedom to stop and swim where you want. Priced per boat, so they get cheaper per person as the group grows.
- Dining and music cruises. Good food-and-view pairings. The meal is the reason to go, so they rank below the tours built around the lake.
- Gordy’s Marine. The pick for tow sports and lessons, and a narrower fit for everyone else.
- Lake Lawn Queen. A strong architecture tour, 20 minutes away on a different lake.

If you take one boat ride on Geneva Lake, make it this one. A mail jumper leaps from the moving boat to each pier, drops the mail in the box, and jumps back aboard before the boat pulls away. That happens 75 times on one trip.
The guide fills the gaps with the estates and their Chicago ties, including the original Wrigley estate. The route circles the whole lake, Williams Bay and Fontana included. The tradition is more than 100 years old, and the cruise line calls it one of the last mailboat deliveries in the country.
Best for, and when to skip it
Best for a first trip to the lake, or anyone who wants the full shoreline and its history in one sitting. The operator lists it for all ages.
Skip it before June 15 or after September 15, when it doesn’t run, or if you only have an hour. The Best of the Lake Tour fits that day better.
Local tips
For the 2027 season, the cruise line says reservations open in June. Book as soon as they do if your dates are fixed.
Weekday departures fill slower than Saturdays. Pick open-air seating to watch the jumps up close; covered seating is there if the weather turns. There’s a snack bar, a full cash bar, and restrooms on board.
Parking and access
Boats leave the Riviera Docks at 812 Wrigley Drive, 1 block south of Broad Street and Main Street. The cruise line has no lot. Downtown parking is metered with a 5-hour limit, paid at kiosks or through the ParkMobile app.
The City of Lake Geneva lists free lots and accessible parking. Strollers are usually allowed aboard, though crew may ask you to fold one on busy days.
Common mistakes
Showing up on a July Saturday hoping to buy seats at the dock. And feeding the meter for 2 hours when the tour alone runs 2.5.
Nearby: the Geneva Lake Shore Path starts right at the docks, and downtown’s lunch spots are in the Lake Geneva restaurant guide.
Full Lake and Best of the Lake tours, Lake Geneva Cruise Line

- Full Lake

- Best of the Lake
- $43, 1 hour
- Ice Cream Social
- $48, 1.25 hours

Same docks and same vintage fleet as the Mailboat, minus the jumping. The Full Lake Tour circles the entire shoreline in 2 hours. Best of the Lake is a 1-hour loop past the best-known estates, names like Wrigley and Maytag.
From May to mid-June and after mid-September, the Full Lake Tour is the pick. It covers the same ground the Mailboat does.
Best for, and when to skip it
Best for a shoulder-season visit or a rainy afternoon. The fleet includes enclosed, climate-controlled boats.
Skip the 1-hour tour if the Mailboat is running and you have the time. The extra $17 buys 90 more minutes and the jumps.
Local tips
The Ice Cream Social Tour runs on the Grand Belle and adds a sundae to a shorter loop. Groups of 20 or more get special rates through the cruise line.
Nearby: ice cream, bakeries, and candy shops downtown.
Black Point Estate and Gardens

- From
- $55 adult
- Length
- 3.5 hours
- Season
- May to Oct 31
- Access
- By boat only
- Value
- 5 of 5
Every other tour points at the houses. This one takes you inside. Chicago brewer Conrad Seipp built Black Point in 1888 as a summer house on the south shore, and it stayed in the Seipp family for more than a century.
It’s a 20-room Queen Anne house on about 7 acres of gardens, now run by the Wisconsin Historical Society and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1994. The trip is a 45-minute narrated cruise, a 90-minute guided tour of the house and grounds, and the ride back.
Best for, and when to skip it
Best for architecture and history, and for anyone who has already done the Mailboat. Skip it if you have less than half a day.
Local tips
The 10:30 a.m. departure can add an $18 boxed lunch. The Nooks and Crannies Tour ($60) opens rooms off the standard route and ends with a beer or wine toast to Seipp.
In October, Poe at the Point ($85) sails at night for live readings of Edgar Allan Poe inside the house.
Parking and access
There’s no public road access; every visitor arrives on the cruise line’s boat from the Riviera Docks, so park downtown. The cruise line says the tour involves about 100 stairs, so call ahead if stairs are a concern.
Common mistakes
Trying to drive there. And booking a 3.5-hour tour with a dinner reservation 3 hours out.

Best for, and when to skip it
Best for a birthday or anniversary dinner. Skip dinner cruises if the narration is what you came for; the meal gets the attention.
Local tips
Themed luncheons rotate through the season: a Luau Luncheon ($82) in summer and an Oktoberfest Luncheon ($79) in fall. They’re listed under the cruise line’s limited event cruises.
Nearby: the land version is in the best Lake Geneva supper clubs.
Sunset cruises on Geneva Lake

- Cocktail Cruise
- $55, 2 hours
- Night
- Sundays
- Music
- Live
- Departs
- 812 Wrigley Dr
For sunset on Geneva Lake, book the Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Sunday Night Cocktail Cruise: live music and drinks as the weekend winds down. Downtown sits at the east end, so the sunset lines up with the length of the lake.
For a private sunset, Marina Bay runs captained pontoon charters and Jerry’s adds a captain to tritoon rentals. On Delavan Lake, the Lake Lawn Queen runs its own Sunset Tour.
Boat rentals on Geneva Lake
Rentals are priced per boat, so a full pontoon costs less per person than cruise tickets. Plan for a Wisconsin boating safety certificate if the driver was born on or after January 1, 1989, and for age minimums set by each company.
Marina Bay Boat Rentals

- Pontoon
- $435 for 2 hours
- Also
- Sport boats, waverunners
- Season
- May to Sept, daily
- Where
- 300 Wrigley Dr
- Value
- 3 of 5
Marina Bay calls itself the largest water sports center on the lake, on the pier across from the Harbor Shores Hotel. The fleet covers 18 to 22-foot sport boats, pontoons, Yamaha waverunners, and tubes.
A 6-person pontoon runs $435 for 2 hours, $535 for 3, and $600 for 4. You’re paying partly for the downtown location.
Rules to know before you book
Renters must be 30 or older. Party and celebration boats require a Marina Bay captain, and captained pontoon charters carry 6 to 8 people.
You can’t dock at other piers, and the pontoons have no restroom, so plan a stop back at the Marina Bay pier.
Parking and access
No lot. Street parking downtown is limited, and the company asks you to check in 30 minutes before your reservation.

By its own account, Lake Geneva’s original boat rental, started by Elmer Zingle in 1929 and still family-owned. The boat hut sits on the Riviera Docks, the same stretch the cruise line uses.
Crest tritoons seat 10 to 12, and deck boats and runabouts handle tubing. The 30-foot Endeavour catamaran is the quiet option: a half or full-day sail instead of a motorboat.
Local tips
Captains are available if you’d rather not drive. Parking downtown is paid, so factor meters into a 4-hour rental.
Gordy’s Marine and Jerry’s Majestic Marine, Fontana

Fontana is the west-end alternative to the downtown piers, and the two operators here cover different days on the water. Pick Jerry’s for a tritoon and a relaxed afternoon; pick Gordy’s for tow sports and lessons. Starting at the west end keeps you clear of the downtown dock traffic.
Jerry’s Majestic Marine

Rules to know before you book
Pontoon renters must be 25 or older. Captains depend on availability, and a cash tip for the driver is expected. Cancellations inside 7 days aren’t refunded, though weather cancellations can be rebooked or refunded.

Local tips
Gordy’s Boat House Bar and Restaurant sits on the same stretch at 336 Lake Street, so a rental can end with dinner at the water’s edge.

Lake Lawn Queen, Delavan Lake

- Length
- 1.5 hours
- Boat
- 76-foot double-decker
- 2026 season
- Mid-May to early Sept
- Where
- 2400 E. Geneva St, Delavan
- Value
- 4 of 5
About 20 minutes west of downtown Lake Geneva, Delavan Lake has 5 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright along its shore, and they’re easier to see from the water than from South Shore Drive. The list includes Penwern, the 1900 Fred B. Jones estate, and the 1902 Charles Ross House.
The resort bills the 76-foot Queen as Delavan Lake’s only cruise boat. It has an open top deck, a climate-controlled main level with restrooms, and a cash bar. The Sunset Tour includes 2 drinks with an adult ticket.
Local tips
In 2026 the public tours ran mostly on weekends. Local lake association materials point out that Oak Park, Illinois is the only other place with a string of Wright’s Prairie-style houses like the one on Delavan Lake.
Nearby: the Delavan community guide and the 26 lakes around Lake Geneva.
Specialty and seasonal cruises

The cruise line’s limited event calendar changes every year, but these ran in 2026. Check the limited event cruises page for current dates.
- Perseid Meteor Shower Cruise ($45, 2 hours) in August. The open lake is darker than downtown, which helps.
- Fireworks tours for the Fourth of July and the Venetian Festival. These tend to sell out first.
- Fall cruises: the Oktoberfest Luncheon in September and Poe at the Point in October.
- Santa Cruise in the holiday season, tied to the cruise line’s Christmas Tree Festival, and a New Year’s Day Polar Plunge viewing tour.

Hidden gems on the water
The Black Point Nooks and Crannies Tour gets you into rooms the standard tour skips, for $5 more than the regular tour.
The Elmer’s catamaran is a half or full-day sail from the downtown docks. And the Lake Lawn Queen probably gets skipped by a lot of Geneva Lake visitors simply because it’s on Delavan Lake.
Boat tours by season

Spring
Black Point opened May 2 in 2026, and Marina Bay opens in May. The water is cold, so pack a layer even on warm days.
Summer
The Mailboat runs June 15 to September 15. Mornings are usually calmer; wind and weekend boat traffic build chop by afternoon.
Fall
Black Point runs through October 31, with Poe at the Point and the Oktoberfest Luncheon on the calendar. Marina Bay’s season ends in September.
Winter
Rentals close. The Santa Cruise and the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge viewing tour are the winter options. See winter activities for the rest.
Weekdays or weekends: weekday seats and rentals are easier to get and the lake is quieter. Morning or evening: mornings for calm water, evenings for the sunset down the lake.
If you’re moving here
Once you live on or near Geneva Lake, the questions change from which tour to book to how you’ll get on the water all season. Boat clubs sit between renting and owning. Carefree Boat Club runs from the Baker House pier at 327 Wrigley Drive and from Lake Lawn Resort on Delavan Lake, and Gordy’s runs its own Cobalt club in Fontana.
Pier rights are the other big one. Lakefront and lake-access properties handle piers and slips very differently, and launch access and fees are set town by town. Check with the municipality before you trailer a boat.
Downtown Lake Geneva is roughly 90 minutes from downtown Chicago, depending on traffic. If you’ll mostly be up on weekends, price a boat club against owning and storing your own boat.

Rental companies also set their own minimum ages: Marina Bay requires renters to be 30 or older, and Jerry’s Majestic Marine requires pontoon renters to be 25 or older. A hired captain gets around both.
