This week around Lake Geneva has that “spring finally remembered it has a job” feeling. Patios are waking up, downtown is getting busier, and the calendar is starting to look a little dangerous in the best way.

We’ve got ABBA and Fleetwood Mac tribute music at Geneva Stage. We’ve got Into the Woods opening in Elkhorn. We’ve got Derby parties with big hats, mint juleps, and people pretending they picked the winning horse based on deep research instead of the name. And now we’ve got Cinco De Mayo celebrations rolling into the weekend too, especially in Delavan and downtown Lake Geneva.

Honestly, the lake is not easing into May. It is kicking the door open.

Thumbs Up lists its Cinco De Derby party for May 2 from 5 PM to 2:30 AM, with drink specials tied to both Cinco De Mayo and the Kentucky Derby. Delavan’s Cinco de Mayo Fest runs May 1 through May 3 with music, food, and parade events across the weekend.

Geneva Stage is bringing a double tribute night to downtown Lake Geneva with Arrival & Dreams, featuring the music of ABBA and Fleetwood Mac. Visit Lake Geneva lists the event for Thursday, April 30 at 7 PM at Geneva Stage.

This is the kind of show that starts as “we’ll go for something fun to do” and ends with someone emotionally singing Fleetwood Mac like they have personally lived through every lyric.

No judgment.

Downtown Lake Geneva on a Thursday night already has its own little buzz, and a tribute night like this gives you a good excuse to make it a full evening. Dinner first. Show after. Maybe one more drink because Broad Street has a way of convincing people they are younger than they are.

Also happening Thursday, Harpoon Willie’s in Williams Bay has live music, Fat Cat’s in Lake Geneva has live music, and Jennings Holler at Jackass Saloon in Eagle has Ladies Night.

Lakeland Players opens Into the Woods on Friday, May 1 at Sprague Theater in Elkhorn. Visit Lake Geneva lists the show running May 1 through May 17, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 PM and Sunday matinees at 2 PM.

Stephen Sondheim, fairy tale characters, local theater, and enough emotional chaos to remind you that fairy tales were never quite as sweet as Disney made them look.

And can we talk about local theater for half a second? Because there is something great about seeing a live show close to home, then grabbing dinner nearby, and not having to pay $47 to park in a concrete ramp that smells like old coffee and regret.

Elkhorn gets points for that.

Friday, May 1 runs from 3 PM to 9 PM, with:

• DJ Smilez from 3 PM to 5 PM
• Stand-up comedy with Adrian Avila at 5 PM
• Cantante Letticia Vela at 6 PM
• Los Cadetes de Tony Caño at 7 PM
• Addios at 9 PM

Saturday, May 2 runs from 10 AM to 9 PM, including:

• Car show from 10 AM to 2 PM in the United Methodist Church parking lot
• DJ Smilez from 10 AM to noon
• Balet Folkorico Juvenil and Sangre Mexicana de Beloit at noon
• Payaso Guapetin at 1 PM
• Jalapeño eating event at 2 PM

Sunday, May 3 includes:

• Parade lineup at 10 AM
• Parade at 10:30 AM near Washington and 7th Street
• DJ Abel

This is the one you plan around if you want a full festival feel. Food, music, performances, and downtown energy. Also, jalapeño eating? Brave. Chaotic. Slightly alarming.

This is exactly the kind of mashup Lake Geneva does well. Derby hats. Cinco drinks. Downtown bar energy. Probably one person in a seersucker jacket standing next to someone in a sombrero-inspired party look, both convinced they nailed the assignment.

They probably did.

Thumbs Up is also right in the thick of downtown, so this makes an easy stop if you’re bouncing between dinner, live music, and Saturday night plans.

PIER 290 is one of those places that reminds people why Williams Bay has such a loyal following. It feels lakey without trying too hard. You get the view, the marina energy, the cocktails, and the “maybe we should look at houses over here” moment that sneaks up on people.
