What’s Happening at The Lake: Maxwell Street Days and Fair Week Loading, August 26 to September 1, 2026

Hey Lake Lovers, this is the calm week. Sort of.

Venetian Festival packed up Sunday. The 177th Walworth County Fair opens next Wednesday. What sits in between is seven days of downtown getting its sidewalks back, a three-day sale on those same sidewalks, and one ticket deadline that saves you real money if you catch it.

From Wednesday, August 26 through Tuesday, September 1, the lake area has Maxwell Street Days taking over downtown Friday through Sunday, a Tom Petty tribute at Geneva Stage, resort music and bonfires in Fontana, and the last stretch of proper summer before Labor Day does what Labor Day does.

What’s happening in Lake Geneva this week?

Maxwell Street Days runs Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, 10 AM to 5 PM daily in downtown Lake Geneva. It’s free, it covers West Main, Broad, and Geneva streets, and roughly 30 shops put their clearance on the sidewalk.

The Walworth County Fair carnival wristband presale ends Tuesday, September 1 at midnight. $32 now, $37 starting September 2. For a family of four that’s a $20 swing, which is one funnel cake and a corn dog you’ll regret in the best way.

Everything else this week is the good kind of small: patio music, a tribute band, bonfires, and a downtown you can actually park in.

Three Walworth County Fair events worth planning around

The fair opens Wednesday, September 2 and runs through Labor Day Monday, September 7, at 411 E. Court St. in Elkhorn. That’s about fifteen minutes up WI-67 from downtown Lake Geneva. Theme this year is “Glitter and Gold: A Fair to Behold.”

Grandstand shows are ticketed separately from gate admission. Check at checkout whether your ticket includes the gate, because that’s the mistake that turns a nice evening into a parking lot argument.

Three nights stand out.

1. Rice Pro Rodeo with Bella Cain, opening night

Wednesday, September 2 | 5:30 PM | Grandstand

Opening night, earliest start of the week, and the best-value night of the fair by a wide margin. Wednesday is senior pricing day, so daily admission drops to $10 for anyone 62 and up.

A rodeo followed by a country set from Bella Cain, who have basically become house band for Walworth County at this point. If you’re bringing parents or grandparents up from Chicago, this is the night to do it. Smallest crowd, easiest parking, full fair experience.

Wristband hours Wednesday start at 3 PM, so you can get the kids on rides before the grandstand fills.

2. Lynyrd Skynyrd

Saturday, September 5 | 7:30 PM | Grandstand

The one people drive in for. This is the biggest gate of the week, the fullest lots, and real backup on Court Street.

Strategy matters here. Get there early, park where they point you, and walk the exhibit buildings while everyone else is circling. The barns, the Discovery Barn, the Amazing Anastasini Circus and everything on Peggy’s Park Stage are all included with gate admission, and Saturday afternoon is when most people skip them entirely.

Also on Saturday, at 1 PM at the Barnyard Adventure Learning Coop: the Wisconsin Honey Queen. That one got left off the printed schedule, so consider it inside information.

3. Ludacris with DJ Bizzon

Sunday, September 6 | 7:30 PM | Grandstand

Yes, that Ludacris. At the Walworth County Fair. Between the dairy barn and the demolition derby.

County fairs remain undefeated and we will not be taking questions.

Sunday is a strong all-day play because wristband hours start at noon, the crowd spreads out across a longer day, and you’re not fighting a Saturday-scale gate. If you’ve got teenagers who’ve been unimpressed by the lake all summer, this is your night.

And the honorable mention: the Labor Day demolition derby runs three heats on Monday, September 7 at 12:30, 3:00, and 5:30 PM. The 12:30 heat is the most family-schedulable grandstand event of the entire week. Catch it and still be home for dinner.

One thing to verify before you plan a late Labor Day: the fair’s FAQ says grounds close at 8 PM Monday, while the carnival page sells Monday wristbands good until 9 PM. Those don’t line up. Call the Fair Office at 262-723-3228.

Maxwell Street Days takes downtown, August 28 to 30

Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 | 10 AM to 5 PM daily | West Main, Broad, and Geneva streets | Free

Downtown Lake Geneva’s summer sidewalk sale, run by the Lake Geneva BID for close to 30 years. Roughly 30 shops and restaurants move clearance onto the sidewalks: clothing, shoes, jewelry, gifts, artwork, sporting goods, books, home goods.

Which day depends on what you want.

• Friday. Best selection, thinnest crowd, and you can still park on a side street at 10:15 AM. Come Friday if you want a specific thing in your size.
• Saturday. Busiest and most fun. Live music, full patios, whole downtown at volume. Selection thins out by mid-afternoon.
• Sunday. Deepest markdowns on what’s left. Nobody wants to carry inventory back inside. Picked over, but the math works.

Two spots most visitors miss: JAYNE Outlet at 734 W. Main and Pink Moon Bay Outlet at 875 W. Main are permanent outlets for boutiques with full-price stores a few doors down. During Maxwell Street they’re stacking a sale on top of outlet pricing. Start there, work back toward Broad.

Right in the middle of the sidewalk sale route. Easy landing spot when your feet quit.

Farmers markets and the last real swim weekend

The useful way to build this week

Do the deadline first. Buy the fair wristbands online before Tuesday night. Takes four minutes and saves $5 a head.

Then pick one downtown day. Friday morning at Maxwell Street if you want to shop seriously, Saturday if you want the atmosphere and the tribute show after.

Leave Sunday for the water. The lake in late August is warm, the boat traffic has dropped off since Venetian, and next weekend belongs to Elkhorn.

Then next week, pick one fair night. Wednesday for value and easy parking, Saturday for Skynyrd, Sunday for Ludacris. Trying to do all three is how people end up eating fried cheese curds four nights in a row and regretting the whole arrangement.
