The #1 Guide for Things to Do in Lake Geneva

The Geneva Lake Shore Path: The #1 Attraction

It’s a legal right-of-way that has never been closed. You walk past homes built by the Wrigley, Maytag, and Wacker families on public land. Five access points: downtown Lake Geneva, Williams Bay, Fontana, Big Foot Beach State Park, and Linn Pier on the south shore. Year-round, free, and unlike anything else in the Midwest.

Nothing on this list comes close to the Shore Path for pure beauty and uniqueness.
You’re on a public footpath; you’re walking through the backyards of 150-year-old lakefront estates built by the people who built Chicago.

The Wrigley Family Estates on Snake Road are among the most storied properties on the south shore. The chewing gum dynasty’s summer legacy, still visible and still magnificent from the path.

Stone Manor, the largest of the lake mansions, with a rooftop pool and underground garage, started as a 19th-century estate and has been an episcopal school, a restaurant, and a Christmas tree museum in the intervening years.

Glanworth Gardens sold in 2022 for the highest confirmed residential sale price in Wisconsin history.

The Shore Path in early October morning with nobody else on it is one of the specific pleasures available within 90 minutes of Chicago. The lake on one side. The estate grounds on the other. The light doing what fall light does. Nothing else required.

The Beaches: Five Very Different Experiences

Geneva Lake has five public beach access points. Riviera Beach in downtown Lake Geneva is the most central, with lifeguards Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Angel of the Waters Fountain (a replica of the Bethesda Terrace fountain in Central Park), and the Lake Geneva Cruise Line boarding point. Fontana Beach on the western shore is the widest sandy beach with Movies on the Beach in summer on an inflatable screen. Williams Bay Beach on the north shore is the quiet option with the most relaxed atmosphere and free parking throughout the community.

Riviera Beach

The anchor. The Mailboat boards here. The Angel of the Waters fountain is here. A replica of the Bethesda Terrace fountain in Central Park, New York. Lifeguards Memorial Day through Labor Day. Walk directly to downtown restaurants and shops after. If you’re doing one beach, this is the one that puts you at the center of everything.

Fontana Beach

The widest sandy beach on the lake with the most room for families. Lifeguards Memorial Day through Labor Day. Movies on the Beach in summer on an inflatable screen after dark. Check the schedule at fontana-wi.gov. Reid Park and the Little Foot Playground (Funtana) are right there, which makes Fontana Beach the best full-day family beach option. Abbey Resort and Gordy’s Marine are within a short walk.

Williams Bay Beach

The quietest option. Lifeguards Memorial Day through Labor Day. Free parking in the lot directly across the street. The north shore runs at a different pace than downtown and Fontana, less crowded on summer Saturdays, easier to find a spot, and Pier 290 is right there when you’re ready for dinner.

Big Foot Beach State Park

On the east end of the lake, Big Foot Beach State Park has its own sand beach plus 6.5 miles of wooded hiking trails and 100 campsites behind it. Most people stop at the downtown beaches and never make it out here, which means the water is calmer and the crowd is lighter on a peak July Saturday. That’s worth knowing. Lifeguards in summer. Parking requires a state park sticker or day pass.

Linn Pier on the South Shore

Linn Pier Road on the south shore has a public swimming pier and boat launch with Geneva Lake access in a quieter, more residential setting. The South Shore doesn’t get the visitor traffic that Riviera and Fontana do, which is the whole point of coming out here. The views back across the lake from the south shore looking north are genuinely excellent.

On the Water: Boat Tours, Rentals, and Lake Cruises

The most popular on-water experiences at Lake Geneva are the Mailboat Tour (Lake Geneva Cruise Line, June 15–September 15, departs Riviera Beach), the Black Point Estate Tour by boat to an 1888 Gilded Age mansion on the south shore (Fodor’s Top 10 Home Estate Tours in the U.S.), pontoon and speedboat rentals from Marina Bay Boat Rentals and Elmer’s, sunset cruises from Gordy’s Lakefront Marine in Fontana, kayak and paddleboard rentals from Clearwater Outdoor, and the Lake Lawn Queen boat tour past five Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes on Delavan Lake. Book the Mailboat Tour early. It sells out on summer weekends.

The Mailboat Tour

Over 100 years old and still the best single activity recommendation we make to first-time visitors. College athletes jump on and off the moving Walworth Mailboat to deliver mail to 75 lakefront estates, with a narrated history of each property as the boat moves around the lake. The athletic mail delivery alone is worth the ticket. The history is genuinely interesting. June 15 through September 15. The Cruise Line also runs Sunset Cruises, Dinner Cruises, and Jazz Cruises through the season and the Santa Cruise a sail to the North Pole in December.  Something for every occasion and every budget. Book all of it at cruiselakegeneva.com.

The Black Point Estate Tour

Black Point Estate is the one that stops people mid-sentence when you describe it. A 13-bedroom Victorian summer home built in 1888 by Chicago beer baron Conrad Seipp and his wife Catharina, sitting on a bluff above Geneva Lake’s south shore, topped by a tower that rises above the treeline, and accessible only by boat  Just like the family got there in the 19th century.

Seipp was one of Chicago’s major brewery owners and Black Point was his summer escape. Four generations of his family used it as a summer home and, by the early 2000s, the estate was unique on the entire lake for remaining almost entirely unchanged from its original 1888 condition. That’s not a marketing line. The house genuinely reflects the decorative choices, the furniture, and the domestic organization of a wealthy Gilded Age Chicago family’s summer life. The Wisconsin Historical Society took over day-to-day management in 2012 and added it to their portfolio of historical sites around the state.

Tours run seasonally through an arrangement with the Lake Geneva Cruise Line. You board at Riviera Beach, the boat takes you around the south shore to the estate’s dock, and you tour the house with a guide who knows the Seipp family story in detail. The National Register of Historic Places recognized Black Point in 1994. Fodor’s Travel named it one of the 10 Best Home Estate Tours in the U.S. It’s that good.

Book through cruiselakegeneva.com. Tours operate spring through fall. Check current season dates and availability before planning around it.

Boat Rentals

Marina Bay Boat Rentals at 300 Wrigley Drive is the largest operation with an updated 2026 fleet. Elmer’s at 195 Wrigley Drive has been family-owned for 80-plus years. Gordy’s in Fontana has Cobalt boats and sunset cruises with an optional driver. Jerry’s Majestic Marine, also in Fontana at Chuck’s Lakeshore Inn pier, rents WaveRunners and pontoons for the western shore crowd. Three hours on a pontoon with no particular destination is the right way to understand why people buy property around this lake.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Clearwater Outdoor at 744 W. Main Street rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards on Geneva Lake with beginner lessons available. The north shore near Williams Bay has lighter boat traffic and is better for first-time paddlers. In winter, Clearwater switches to snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals.

Hiking, Biking, Fishing, and Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor activities around Geneva Lake go well beyond the beach and the Shore Path. Big Foot Beach State Park has 6.5 miles of wooded hiking trails plus a beach and camping. Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay has 231 acres of free walking trails. The John Muir Trail System at Kettle Moraine South Unit near Whitewater is the regional mountain biking destination. The White River State Trail is 12 miles of crushed limestone for families. Geneva Lake holds the Wisconsin state Brown Trout record. Ice fishing runs December through February.

Hiking

Big Foot Beach State Park at 1550 S. Lake Shore Drive has 6.5 miles of wooded trails behind the beach, one of the most underused hiking resources in the area because most visitors stop at the sand. Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay is 231 acres of protected oak woodland, boardwalk wetlands, and prairie with a free observation tower. Both are worth a morning.

Biking

The White River State Trail is 12 miles of level crushed limestone connecting Elkhorn, Lyons, and Springfield. The right choice for family riders. Lake Geneva Ziplines and Adventures has 12 miles of single-track mountain biking through 100 wooded acres for intermediate to expert riders. The Kettle Moraine South Unit near Whitewater has the John Muir Trail System, the premier mountain biking destination in the region.

Fishing

Delavan Lake is the best Walleye and Muskie fishery in the region. Lake Como is the trophy early-season Largemouth Bass destination. The Hook Up Guide Service (262-758-9200, thehookupfishingguide.com) and Guide IDE (262-993-7729, guideidefishing.com) both run licensed trips on the area lakes. For fly fishing on the streams and creeks of Walworth County, In The Flow Guide Service (intheflowflyfishing.com) runs guided fly fishing experiences that are a completely different version of the same fishery.

High Adventure

Lake Geneva Ziplines and Adventures on 100 wooded acres has ziplining, a high ropes course, and a climbing tower alongside the mountain biking trails. Lake Geneva Balloon Company runs hot-air balloon rides over the region. A completely different view of the lake and the Kettle Moraine terrain. Dan Patch Stables at Grand Geneva has guided 45-minute horseback trail rides and pony rides.

The Perfect Lake Geneva Weekend: A Simple Plan

A classic Lake Geneva weekend from Chicago starts Friday evening with dinner at Sopra Bistro or Oak and Oar on the South Shore for the sunset views. Or Sopra Bistro on Main Street if you want to stay downtown. Saturday morning is Simple Cafe and the Shore Path, then the Mailboat Tour in the afternoon. Saturday evening is Pier 290 in Williams Bay for fire pits, live music, and outdoor energy. Sunday is Egg Harbor brunch, then Kishwauketoe or Safari Lake Geneva before the drive home. That’s the sequence. It works.

The template holds because it moves through the different faces of the lake in a logical order. The Shore Path gives you the history and the estates on foot. The Mailboat puts you on the water with the narration. Oak and Oar gives you the most magnificent sunset view on the South Shore. Pier 290 Saturday night is the outdoor music scene. Sunday morning is the quiet version of everything.

Friday arrival: Dinner with a view. Oak and Oar at the Geneva Inn for the sunset table on the Shore Path. Sopra Bistro on Main Street if you’re staying downtown. Popeye’s if you’re keeping it casual. Walk Flat Iron Park after.

Saturday: Simple Cafe for breakfast, then the Shore Path from Riviera Beach. Do the section toward Williams Bay if you’re not doing 21 miles. Mailboat Tour in the afternoon (2-hour commitment, worth every minute). Pontoon rental from Marina Bay if you have time before dinner. Pier 290 in Williams Bay for the outdoor evening. Fire pits, live music, boats at the dock.

Sunday: Egg Harbor Cafe for brunch. Walk Kishwauketoe in Williams Bay for 45 minutes. Safari Lake Geneva if you have kids or want to see something completely unexpected. Drive home before the Sunday traffic peaks at 3 PM.

Why Chicago Families Keep Coming Back

Lake Geneva has been Chicago’s lake destination for 150 years for a reason that hasn’t changed: the drive is 83 miles, the lake is genuinely beautiful, and the activity mix (beach, golf, boats, food, outdoor life, shows, history) is comprehensive enough to satisfy every member of a family across four seasons. Most families start with a weekend. Some start coming more frequently. A notable percentage end up buying property. Kim and Joel Reyenga have been in that last conversation for a long time.

The math that makes Lake Geneva work is simple. 90 minutes from Chicago. A glacier-formed lake with 142-foot depths and exceptional clarity. Championship golf at 15 courses including 90 holes by Hall of Fame architects. Trevino, Player, Palmer, Nicholas, Dye. The Shore Path, 21.9 miles of public access past 150 years of Chicago wealth and architecture. A food scene that has grown past the resort minimum. A craft beverage scene with a Top 10 U.S. Speakeasy. Safari Lake Geneva, Tristan Crist, Yerkes Observatory, the Mailboat, Dancing Horses in Delavan, Belfry Theatre, attractions that that don’t require apologizing for the category they’re in.

The outdoor life is genuinely four seasons: beach in summer, Shore Path in fall, ice fishing and Winterfest in winter, farmers markets and Restaurant Week in spring. The golf community infrastructure at Geneva National and Abbey Springs gives buyers who want that lifestyle a direct path to cart-to-tee living. The real estate market has held its value through multiple economic cycles because the scarcity of lakefront land is structural and the Chicago buyer demand is consistent.

What most first-time visitors don’t expect is the October version. The water is still warm from summer. The crowds are gone. The Shore Path is in color. The best restaurants have open tables. That’s when people start looking at listings on their phones.

Kim & Joel: The best way to discover if you want to own a home here is to come live with us for a while. Play the courses, see the shows, and eat our food. We can help you book a trip and give you great recommendations.
